Man arrested for alleged rape attempt on Bengal woman at hotel in Bhubaneswar
A man was arrested on Friday for allegedly attempting to rape a woman from West Bengal at a hotel in Odisha's Bhubaneswar’s Bharatpur area.
Acting on the survivor's complaint, police registered a case and launched an investigation. The accused was subsequently apprehended and produced before a court on the same day.
Following his court appearance, the accused was remanded to judicial custody and sent to jail.
Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The survivor, a resident of Kolkata’s Girish Park area, has been staying with her husband at a hotel in GA Colony under Bharatpur police limits for the past four months. The accommodation was provided by her husband’s private company, where he works.
Accused Allegedly Took Advantage Of Husband’s Absence
Police identified the accused as Jayanta Kumar Nayak, who was known to both the woman and her husband.
According to police, Nayak allegedly entered the couple’s hotel room on the pretext of talking after the woman’s husband left for work on Friday. He then allegedly dragged and pulled the woman before attempting to sexually assault her.
The woman managed to escape and rushed to Bharatpur Police Station, where she lodged a complaint.
Police Arrest Accused Within Hours
Acting on the complaint, Bharatpur police registered a case, arrested the accused, recorded the survivor’s statement and conducted her medical examination.
Jayanta Kumar Nayak was later produced before a court and sent to judicial custody on Friday.
Police have also begun examining CCTV footage from the hotel and are collecting other evidence. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) has been roped in to assist in the investigation.

Officials said efforts are being made to gather all available evidence so the case can be presented strongly in court. Police are also trying to have the matter heard in a fast-track court to ensure speedy justice for the survivor.
