Building India’s Next Economic Powerhouse

R. C. Nishad · 23 जून 2026
India’s economic transformation over the past three decades has largely been driven by the growth of its western and southern states. Cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai have emerged as major centres of manufacturing, technology, infrastructure and investment. Yet as India moves towards its vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047, the next chapter of growth may well be written in the East. West Bengal, once the industrial heartland of India, stands at the threshold of a historic opportunity. With its strategic location, strong industrial legacy, skilled workforce, world-class connectivity and access to international markets, the state possesses all the ingredients necessary to become India’s next economic powerhouse. For decades, several industries in Bengal remained stagnant or closed due to a variety of economic and policy challenges. However, recent developments, including the reopening of long-shuttered industrial units and growing investor interest, indicate that the state is once again attracting attention as a destination for industrial growth and economic development. One of the most significant opportunities lies in the power and energy sector.  India is expected to witness unprecedented growth in electricity demand over the coming decades. Massive investments are being made in renewable energy, transmission infrastructure, battery storage, smart grids and electric mobility. To support this transition, the country requires a robust manufacturing ecosystem for transformers, switchgear, batteries, inverters, power electronics and advanced electrical equipment. Eastern India currently lacks a major Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) testing and certification facility. Manufacturers and utilities across West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand and the North-Eastern states are often required to transport equipment over long distances for testing and certification, increasing costs and causing project delays. The establishment of a state-of-the-art CPRI Laboratory in Kolkata, integrated with a Power Equipment Manufacturing, Testing and Innovation Park, can transform the region into a major hub for power sector manufacturing and research. Such a facility would support transformer manufacturing, battery energy storage systems, solar inverter production, smart grid technologies, switchgear manufacturing and renewable energy equipment testing more importantly, it would provide the foundation for attracting substantial domestic and international investment into Eastern India. The industrial sector offers another major avenue for growth. West Bengal possesses a rich manufacturing heritage. From engineering and heavy industries to jute, chemicals and rail equipment, the state has long played an important role in India’s industrial development. Today, several industrial assets remain underutilized and can be revived through targeted investments and policy support. The development of industrial corridors, manufacturing parks and export-oriented clusters can attract investments in electrical equipment, railway systems, defence manufacturing, electronics, industrial machinery and advanced materials. Such initiatives would create a complete ecosystem of large industries, ancillary units and service providers, generating employment opportunities across skill levels. Urban development presents equally significant opportunities. Kolkata and its surrounding regions can become one of India’s most important urban growth corridors. Rapid urbanization requires investments in affordable housing, metro rail expansion, roads, bridges, water supply systems, sewage treatment plants, waste management facilities and digital infrastructure. The construction and infrastructure sectors have one of the highest employment multipliers in the economy. Every investment in urban infrastructure creates jobs for engineers, architects, technicians, construction workers, suppliers and service providers. A sustained urban development programme across the state can generate lakhs of employment opportunities while improving the quality of life for millions of citizens. The healthcare sector represents another area of tremendous potential. Kolkata already serves as a healthcare destination for much of Eastern and North-Eastern India. By encouraging investments in super-speciality hospitals, medical colleges, biotechnology parks, pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, medical device production units and telemedicine infrastructure, the state can emerge as a leading healthcare and life sciences hub. Such investments would not only strengthen healthcare delivery but also create employment opportunities for doctors, nurses, technicians, researchers, engineers and support staff. The healthcare sector alone has the potential to become one of the largest employers in the region. Research, innovation and technology must become the cornerstone of New Bengal’s growth story. Institutions such as IIT Kharagpur, NIT Durgapur, IIEST Shibpur and Jadavpur University provide a strong foundation for innovation-led development. Research parks, start up incubators, technology transfer centres and industry-academia partnerships can accelerate the development of indigenous technologies in power systems, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing and renewable energy. Kolkata also enjoys a unique advantage as a gateway to Eastern and North-Eastern India and neighbouring countries such as Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Myanmar. Its port infrastructure, logistics network and strategic location make it ideally positioned to become a major trade and export hub. Investments in multimodal logistics parks, inland container depots, warehousing facilities and export-oriented industrial zones can significantly enhance the competitiveness of the region and strengthen India’s Act East Policy. Most importantly, the combined impact of investments across power, manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, urban development and technology can create employment on a massive scale. Direct jobs within industries will be complemented by indirect opportunities across supply chains, services, transportation, construction and ancillary businesses. The potential exists to create several lakh jobs annually while attracting billions of dollars in investment over the coming decades. The vision of “New Bengal” is not merely about economic growth. It is about restoring confidence, reviving industry, empowering youth and creating opportunities that allow future generations to build prosperous lives within the state itself. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly emphasized that India’s development story cannot be complete without the development of Eastern India, particularly West Bengal. Through initiatives such as Make in India, Atmanirbhar Bharat, PM Gati Shakti and the Act East Policy, the Prime Minister has consistently highlighted Bengal’s strategic location and immense economic potential. A developed Bengal is integral to his broader dream of a developed India where Kolkata once again emerges as a major centre of industry, trade, technology and opportunity for future generations. As India advances towards, Eastern India must play a larger role in the nation’s development journey. West Bengal possesses the resources, talent, infrastructure and strategic advantages necessary to lead that transformation. The opportunity is before us. With the right policy support, strategic investments and long-term vision, New Bengal can emerge not only as the economic engine of Eastern India but as one of the most dynamic growth centres of the entire nation. The rise of New Bengal will not simply benefit one state it will strengthen India’s journey towards becoming a global economic powerhouse.
